About

Picture
Dr. Kayla Solomon (she/her) is a trumpet performer, educator, and performing arts wellness advocate based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She recently completed a one-year appointment as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of Saskatchewan (2024/25), where she taught applied trumpet, chamber music, and jazz ensembles, and remains an active member of the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra. Although now based in Winnipeg, Kayla maintains close ties with the musical community she built in Saskatoon and frequently travels across Canada to perform, teach, and present at festivals, clinics, and conferences.

In addition to her performing and teaching, Kayla is passionate about integrating health and wellness into music training. She researches overuse injuries in brass players, particularly embouchure strain, and advocates for physical and mental well-being in the performing arts. This focus led her to earn certification in the Essentials of Performing Arts Medicine through the Performing Arts Medicine Association. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges her musical expertise with athletic training and injury prevention strategies. In summer 2024, she also expanded her teaching scope by instructing a Social Media and Marketing course at the University of Calgary, blending music, entrepreneurship, and digital storytelling.

Kayla’s career highlights include lead trumpet performances at Valleyfair (2023), international collaborations such as recording Ian Krause’s Symphony No. 5 with the Seocho Philharmonia in Seoul, and her first-place win in the 2017 Federation of Canadian Music Festivals brass division. She co-founded Power of Two, a Canadian trumpet-piano duo dedicated to championing Canadian and underrepresented composers. Their commissioned work, The Stars of November by Kenley Kristofferson, earned a Bronze Medal at the Global Music Awards in 2022.

A committed educator, Kayla has taught students of all ages: from private lessons and ensemble coaching to academic courses in marketing and musicianship. She previously taught grade 6–12 band and math at Killarney School and continues to teach trumpet privately through MusicFit Academy. Her teaching philosophy centers on developing well-rounded musicianship, healthy playing habits, and a sustainable approach to performance.

Kayla holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; a Master of Music degree from the University of California, Los Angeles; and a Bachelor of Music degree from Brandon University. She has studied under renowned mentors including Ronald Romm, Jens Lindemann, Dr. Amy Gilreath, and Tito Carrillo, and continues her artistic growth through ongoing mentorship with Dr. Carole Dawn Reinhart (Professor Emeritus at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna).

Outside of music, Kayla is a former competitive athlete who has played varsity volleyball and participated in collegiate waterskiing. Her athletic background informs her understanding of physical conditioning, recovery, and performance psychology for musicians. She is an artist for Pickett mouthpieces, Soulo mutes, and Robinson’s Remedies, and continues to expand her artistic practice through collaborations, educational outreach, and performances across Canada and beyond.
